What do I need to have for when I bring my new puppy home???
New Puppy Checklist
FIRST YEAR HEALTH and IMMUNITY SUPPORT MUST HAVES/REQUIREMENTS:
____ Olive Leaf Extract - capsules in powder form, not liquid. Puritans Pride 150mg is my recommended brand and strength or any other brand that is in capsule powder form, they don't like the oil. Give ½ capsule daily, mix with food.
____ Ester-C -in powder form. You can get the tablets as they get older, but you need powder for young pups. Give 500mg daily for puppies first year to support their immune system, muscles and cartilage and to prevent future back, hip and knee injuries.
____ Anti-Vaccinosis spray at Adored-Beast-Apothecary-Anti-Vaccinosis-Homeopathy-for-Dogs-Cats-to be used after each shot is given, this is a must have/requirement!!! Please read this article to understand why this is extremely important to have on hand and to use after shots. https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/dog-vaccinations-detox/ This could make a difference of your pup getting allergies or not. It does not reverse the effects of the shot but it removes the toxins and metals due to the shot that cause reactions and long term effects, like allergies. Please see my page on Allergies, Vaccinations and Titer Testing to educate yourself on these topics and why I am recommending Titer Testing your pup.
DAILY VITAMINS
____NuVet Immune Booster Vitamins. Provides key nutrients VITAL for optimal health & to boost immunity during their most vulnerable time. Use it as a ‘treat’ – They love it! I have used lots of different immune boosters and vitamins and NuVet is by far the best one out there, all of my dogs, including your puppy are currently taking NuVet vitamins. Click here: www.nuvet.com/312286 OR Call 800-474-7400, reference # 312286 to order. *The bottle lasts 3 months and if you divide the total by 3 months it comes out to $18.50/mo which is totally worth it to avoid the vets office, which will cost a lot more than that.
OR
____Zesty Paws 8-1 Bites can be used in place of NuVet vitamins. I like these because they have an added probiotic so you don't have to give an additional probiotic.
***You only need one of these options as a daily vitamin (NuVet or Zesty Paws). If you have a brand you like better that's fine too.
BASICS:
____ Puppy Food-Nutri Source Small & Medium Breed Chicken and Rice WITH GRAIN-If you decide not to feed this food BE SURE to transition them slowly to the new food and make sure to feed puppy kibble for the first year, they need those calories. Check www.dogfoodadvisor.com and use ONLY 5 star food for best quality if you wish to change their food. Try to stay away from chicken as they get older as most adult frenchies can't process poultry or feathered protein well. If they seem fine with chicken then no need to avoid it.
____ Water and Food bowls (stainless steel is best or glass– avoid plastic as that attracts bacteria)
____ Dog Bed (Make sure it's fully washable as puppies tend to pee on their beds at first)
____ ID tag and harness (typically not needed for the first 6 months of age)
____ Crate or kennel(You don't need the large one, the medium size will do)
____ Puppy Play Pen to keep your pup safe and out of trouble (see My Favorites Things page for example of what we use)
____ Tarp or a large reusable puppy pad or something to cover the floor where your puppy area is so they don't ruin the floor due to puppy accidents (Amazon has great cheap tarps or washable puppy pads)
____ Optional: Dog Carrier for car and traveling. I like the ones that expand to give them more room. Amazon has some great ones. Keep in mind your puppy should not be out and about walking outdoors and in stores or especially the vets office until they are fully vaccinated, which is 2 weeks after their last set of shots, so the carrier can be very helpful that first few months.
ITEMS NEEDED FOR TRAINING:
____ Puppy pee pads -Costco has the best deal on pee pads
____ Litter Pan, Paper Pellet Litter and Litter Scooper (Great for winter)- You can order the senior litter pan from Amazon that has a lower front ledge for them to get in and out easier. The paper pellet litter can be found at Petco or Amazon or most pet stores. Or an artificial turf with pan is also a great option. You can find several options on Amazon.
____ Paper towels & urine spot cleaner - for accidents
____ Teething toys and basic toys, get one's meant for tough chewers. Frenchies will rip right through stuffed animals and make a mess.
____ Puppy treats for training-small ones are best
GROOMING:
____ Shampoo and conditioner- I only use hypoallergenic shampoos- NuVet also has a great shampoo or I have one of my favorite brands listed on My Favorite Things page. Don’t use human products- Dogs have different PH than humans and our shampoos will be irritating to their skin.
____ Dog brush for use during those shedding months (Furminator works great!)
____ Nail clippers or Grinder(New pups nails need to be clipped weekly)
____ Dog toothbrush and toothpaste- start them young!
____ Ear cleaner - I have my favorite brand listed on My Favorite Things page. Ear cleaning is extremely important in this breed to prevent ear infections that they are prone to.
ONCE YOUR PUPPY COMES HOME:
____ Schedule an appointment with your vet for your pups Well Puppy Visit and second set of shots or preferably Titer Testing. This is a requirement in the contract to do within the first few days of taking your puppy home.
